Varicose veins are dilatations and tortuosities of the veins of the legs, produced by weakness of its walls and insufficiency of its valves. These defects are hereditary and can occur in one of their degrees and at some point in life, up to 80% of women and 20% of men.

As it is a progressive disease, it can be manifested from its lighter degree than the famous "spider veins" or telangiectasias, passing through the true varicose veins that are prominent veins "bulging" in the legs, until arriving at the most advanced state that is venous ulcer, which characteristically occurs at the level of the inner ankle. These signs can be accompanied by some symptoms such as tiredness, heaviness, burning, pain, itchiness (pruritus) and leg cramps, especially at the end of the day.

Diagnosis and treatment of varicose veins

In order to determine what type and degree of varicose veins, an adequate evaluation is made by a Vascular Surgeon , and a detailed Doppler Color Doppler ultrasound study of the venous system of the lower limbs. They are made from liquid sclerotherapy, with foam, with transdermal laser and the combinations of these, as well as mini-phlebectomies with local anesthesia, endovascular laser for the saphenous trunks and perforators with laser of last generation 1470 nm and radial fiber (Unique in Bogotá), as well as ENOF (endovascular venous occlusion with foam under ultrasound guidance) and embolization of pelvic veins, or surgical ligation of the same.

Varicose veins are a hereditary problem, they can not be prevented. What is possible is to control and delay the onset and complications of the disease, performing cardiovascular exercise, avoiding being overweight and using graded compression stockings.

If both parents have varicose veins they have a 90% chance that their children will suffer and if it is only one parent, the chance is reduced to 45%.

In addition, there are special conditions of patients and their type of work, such as being overweight, sedentary, long-term work in standing position without movement as the case of watchmen, shopkeepers, teachers, flower growers, etc.

Varicose veins are a progressive disease, can trigger a thrombophlebitis (thrombus inside a vein), produces changes in skin color (ocher pigmentation) that is irreversible by infiltration of hemosiderin (iron) in the dermis, a rupture of a vein (varicorrhagia), by minimal traumas and even by scratching and with significant hemorrhage and finally an ulcer (wound on the skin) of difficult handling and scarring.
