Keratoconus is a degenerative, and usually progressive, disease that must be attended to by an ophthalmologist. Keratoconus occurs when the cornea, the transparent lens that is in front of the eye, stops being rounded and becomes punctate, causing the patient to lose both quantity and quality of vision.

Some common causes of keratoconus

Regarding the causes of keratoconus is very important to know that it has an important hereditary factor, however, it has also been seen that in patients who are chronically scraping eyes or who frequently rub their eyes, it can induce the onset of the disease .

Generally, keratoconus appears around the adolescence, between the 13 or 14 years, and progresses with the passage of time until the 20 years, that is when the disease stops. However, keratoconus may be progressive throughout life; and the more advanced the disease, the more severe the disease.

Common keratoconus symptoms

As already mentioned, the main symptom of keratoconus is the decrease in the quality and quantity of vision in the patient. This is caused by the cornea being punctured, it generates in the eye a major defect of astigmatism, causing a distortion in the quality of the image. There are other symptoms or manifestations of keratoconus such as scratching, rubbing, eye redness and poor quality of vision, both from far and near.
