What is Obstetrical and Gynecological Ultrasound?

Edited by: TOP DOCTORS® at 04/04/2023

It is an ultrasound diagnostic test that is used in non-pregnant women to rule out pathologies such as fibroids, cysts, tumors, and cancer of the uterus, ovaries, and endometrium.

Obstetric Ultrasound is performed in pregnant women to know whether it is a single or multiple pregnancy, whether it is intrauterine or extrauterine (ectopic). In the second and third trimester ultrasound, the fetal anatomy can be observed and the malformations, the state of the amniotic fluid, the placenta and the position of the fetus as well as its growth can be ruled out.

Process

Ultrasound is done to all pregnant women as part of their prenatal control. The study should be done with high resolution ultrasound equipment and by a gynecological and obstetrical specialist or Radiology, with specific training and certification in Obstetric Ultrasound of first, second and third levels of complexity. There is no contraindication except that in patients who have not started sexual life only pelvic and non-transvaginal ultrasound is performed.

Reliable Study

The most important thing about ultrasound is to make an accurate diagnosis by well trained medical personnel so that the test provides all the information and is reliable.
